Auf den ersten Blick erkennt man ein beliebiges Chemiewerk. Doch es produziert hochreines Silizium und stellt daraus monokristalline Wafer her. Wafer, so nennt man die Scheiben aus reinem Silizium, auf denen integrierte Schaltungen aufgebaut werden, besser bekannt unter dem Namen ICs oder Chips. Das Herstellen von hochreinem Silizium und das Ziehen von Monokristallen aus einer Schmelze ist sehr energieaufwendig. Wacker in Burghausen kann dafür den Strom seines werkseigenen Wasserkraftwerks nutzen. Auch im Simutranskosmos ist die Fabrik auf eine gute Stromversorgung angewiesen. Nur bei ausreichender Stromversorgung wird diese Fabrik genug Wafer für die Computerhersteller liefern.
