Poultry Farm

Detail text

Small farmers used to be called Cottagers. Cottagers did not have enough land to live from. One possibility was to work as a day laborer for the local farmers. What was poorly paid and underestimated. Or to produce higher quality goods, as craftsmen or home workers. This one hardly sells barley, he prefers to feed them to his chickens and can sell their eggs at a higher price than would be possible with cereals.
If he can sell the eggs well, he will lease additional fields and increase production significantly.
Only chicken with porridge every day, the farmer, his wife and children can no longer see the tough, bony old hens. But it doesn't help, it's the only food they have.
The graphic shows a typical Upper Bavarian poor people's house.

Hühnerhof (1800)

Detail text

Kleinbauern nannte man früher Häusler.

Detail text
