A solar pond power plant works with water basins as heat traps. These basins are filled with salt water and fresh water layered on top. The layering is stable due to the different densities of salt water and salt-free water. Total optical reflection occurs at the transition between the layers. The sun's rays remain "trapped" in the lower water layers and are ultimately absorbed. The heat from the brine is converted into electricity using a Stirling engine. Since water (and thus brine) has a very high heat capacity, this system can operate 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, the efficiency is low (<2%)

Ein Solar Pond Kraftwerk arbeitet mit Wasserbecken als Wärmefallen. Diese Becken sind mit Salzwasser und darüber geschichtet Süßwasser gefüllt. Die Schichtung ist aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Dichte von Salzwasser und salzfreiem Wasser stabil. Am Übergang der Schichten tritt optisch Totalreflexion auf. Sie Sonnenstrahlen bleiben dadurch in der unteren Wasserschichten "gefangen" und werden schlussendlich absorbiert. Die Wärme der Salzsole wird mit einem Stirling Motor in Strom umgewandelt. Da Wasser (und damit Salzlake) eine sehr hohe Wärmkapazität hat, können diese Anlage 24 Stunden arbeiten. Leider ist der Wirkungsgrad klein (<2%)
