Steam railcar DT 59

Detail text

The last steam railcar of the Reichsbahn. The steam locomotive industry wanted to counteract the increasingly successful diesel railcars. It should be as easy to operate as a one-man operation like modern diesel engines. The Reichsbahn would have preferred domestic coal to imported diesel, but the light, high-performance boiler with automatic firing, the fast-running steam engine on the bogie and the movable steam pipe between them proved to be very sensitive. To save weight, the exhaust steam was condensed in an air cooler. This allowed to carry less water.

Dampftriebwagen DT 59

Detail text
