The Caledonia was the second steamship go up the Rhine. James Watt junior, the son of the English steam engine pioneer, equipped it and drove it upstream. However, the beam of the engine broke. James Watt let pouring a new beam by the Haniel steelworks in Ruhrort. The entrepreneur Haniel recognizes the potential during a subsequent test drive and decides to build steamships himself. The paddle steamer "City of Mainz" was the first, and also the first build in the Ruhr area. The steelworks became a shipyard and the large shipping company Haniel.

Die Caledonia war das zweite Dampfschiff das den Rhein befuhr. James Watt junior, der Sohn des englischen Dampfmaschinen-Pioniers hat es ausgerüstet und fuhr damit Stromaufwärts. Jedoch brach der Balancier. James Watt lies vom Stahlwerk Haniel in Ruhrort einen neuen gießen. Der Unternehmer Haniel erkennt bei einer anschließenden Probefahrt das Potential und beschließt selbst Dampfschiffe zu bauen. Der Raddampfer "Stadt Mainz" war der erste und auch erste im Ruhrgebiet gebaute. So wird aus dem Stahlwerk eine Werft und die große Rederei Haniel.
